Last year I sponsored a Family Shoot prize at a Women’s Conference which was held in Cape Town at Lewende Woord Kaap. The Van Der Hoven Family won by means of a lucky draw and we schedualed a family shoot at Vergelegen Wine Estate for early January.
It was a hot and humid day, thankfully the gardens are cool and there are plenty shady trees to photograph under. I chose to work with both digital and film mediums, in this case it was 645 on a Pentax 645n using Kodak Portra 800. Post shoot I discovered that I will need a service as my shutter curtain produces over exposure on the edges of the frames below 1/60 sec.
Kodak Professional Portra 800 Film is very similar to Portra 400 but with more noticeable grain and slightly more contrast, yet delivers all the advantages of a high-speed film along with finer grain, higher sharpness, and more natural skin tones and colour reproduction. Kodak Professional Portra 800 Film delivers best-in-class underexposure latitude, with the ability to push to 1600 when you need extra speed. It has warm tones, and is ideal for long lenses, fast action, and low light, enabling you to capture shadow details without flash. Kodak Professional Portra 800Film, for perfectly stunning results with less-than-perfect light.
We were so fortunate to win a photoshoot with Craig Fouché Photography at a Women’s Conference in Cape Town. Our venue of choice was Vergelegen Wine Estate with it’s magnificent gardens and charm. The shoot was absolute fun, we felt at ease even although we are camera shy girls. We really enjoyed every moment which was also a great experience.
we are very satisfied with our images…
I loved the idea of capturing these beautiful moments with my daughters Hannelisa, Tiana and Jani, they are timeless memories. Craig handled the shoot with utmost professionalism and we are very satisfied with our images. I can highly recommend him. Thank you for such a fun-filled afternoonand the beautiful photographs.
Heloise van der Hoven.
Timing is everything and it came together on this day. Hannelisa was so close to the end of her pregnancy, Jani was getting married the following weekend and Heloise was due for a medical procedure the following week after the wedding. Everyone worked so well together, in spite of the heat and we came away with amazing images. The secret is to have fun and be relaxed when when having a photo shoot. What you give the photographer is what you will receive in your final images. The van der Hoven family was so easy to work with and this shows in their images. Shooting with film is an art, you have to know your tools, your film and craft, there is no looking at the back of the camera to see if you got it right, you just have to trust your skills. I enjoy the feel that you get from film, it is less clinical compared to digital and has a more vintage classic look.

This was primarily an outdoor shoot, with a mix of digital and some film shots that were taken.
Again I am very happy with how the results turned out, it is always a good day out when everything runs smoothly, and after developing you have images. It never gets old when you open the Paterson tank and your negatives look good! Negatives were scanned on my Epson V750 at 3200dpi, Photoshop file sizes are around 560Mb as a working file. If you would like to shoot some film photography – small, medium or large format in the studio, or any other environment, get in touch!
